In Colorado, dental hygienists have been able to practice without a dentist present since the 1980's.  You may ask what the benefit of such a model may be.  There are many answers to that question.  The easiest being, you just want your teeth cleaned.  Hygienists practicing independently also provide services at a cost lower than most private dental offices, provide less waiting time and work in a setting that is less stressful than that of a general dental office.

It is important that your dental health comes first, so your hygienist will work to communicate with your home dentist, or provide referrals to a dentist that will fit your needs.
