What is periodontal disease?

Most commonly called "gum disease", periodontal disease starts with inflammation of the gum tissues, and can progress into a more serious condition where bone loss around the teeth can occur.  About 80% of all adults have some form periodontal disease.

How can I prevent periodontal disease?

Daily brushing is not enough.  The bacteria that is problematic is under the gum tissue and in between the teeth.  That is why daily flossing, Waterpik use, toothpicking or proxy brushing is important.  The use of oral probiotics, essential oils and antimicrobial rinses can be helpful, but they do not replace mechanical cleaning.

How often do I need my teeth cleaned?

This is a case by case thing.  In the 1930's a toothpaste commercial used the advertising pitch that you should have your teeth cleaned every 6 months.  This has since been the generic recommendation.  Some people need their teeth cleaned every 3-4 months to reduce bacterial plaque levels and inflammation, and some people just build calculus (tartar) faster.
